English Festival

The English Festival is held annually by the Western Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English .  This event is for students in grades 4-12 (our grouping will be grades 4-6; students in middle school will be grouped in grades 7-9 at Fatima and headed by Miss Heckman- sixth grade teacher) and was organized in an effort to promote quality reading among our students.  Interested students are required to read books from a predetermined list from the council.  I encourage all Fourth Graders to participate, and all four novels will be read in class, regardless of whether your child participates or not. All students who participate in the festival are organized into teams of four or five in order to participate in various activities.

I (Mrs. LeFebvre) will be the coordinator and main contact person for the English Festival for grades 4-6 this year.

The English Festival for grades 4-6 will again be held at LaRoche University in the North Hills of Pittsburgh on Thursday, May 16, 2024. The students will hear a presentation from the featured author (Saadia Faruqi).  They will compete in various activities throughout the day in their small groups of 4 or 5 made up of students from Fatima in grades 4, 5, and 6.  These activities are based on their knowledge of the books. Please visit https://wpcteng.wixsite.com/engfest/grades-4-6 for more information on the selected books for this year and activities.

More information will be coming soon about registration and if you would like to order books (highly recommended- the school does not have many extra copies of the book on hand).

Here were the 2023-2024 books chosen for the English festival:

*A Thousand Questions by Saadia Faruqi

*All in a Drop by Lori Alexander

*New from Here by Kelly Yang

*Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan

Registration is $75 per team, which is $25 per student. Book cost is TBD.

Books will be sent home and purchased early in the fall. Please keep aware of a Google Form to be sent out in late September/early October noting your interest (or not) in the festival, as well as to order the books.
