Homework

and

Quizzes

Homework for Fourth Graders is assigned each Monday through Thursday and should take about 30-45 minutes each night to complete, in accordance with Diocesan guidelines and recommendations. There will be no homework assigned on Fridays over the weekend. I want to ensure quality family time and time of rest and relaxation over the weekend.

Each student receives a Student Planner.  Your child will be responsible for copying his/her assignments from the board each day.  Please check the planner daily and sign each day only when all homework is completed neatly.  The planners will be checked every  morning for completion, communication, and parents' signatures.  At the end of each week, students will receive credit on their reward card if their planner is signed for each day of the week.  It is important that you check the planner and your child's work not only for completion, but to also keep current with what your child is learning.

Assignments completed on time will be given full credit. Incomplete assignments will be deducted from the quarter grade accordingly. Late assignments will have 1 point deducted for each day they are turned in late.

Some homework will be graded for accuracy, some will receive a 'check' and completion points, and some will simply have a 'check' that I saw they completed it and made their best effort. Students will not usually be told, so please always do your best work.

Homework completion is a very important part of the students' routine. It allows them to practice skills learned in class and for the teacher to see their progress and needs for extra practice. Please note that, if a student is not completing their homework, they will be held in from recess time. This is also the policy for grades 5-8 and is an opportunity for the students to get used to the policy in place for the upstairs classrooms.

Each week, we will follow a regular schedule of vocabulary quizzes on Thursday and skills assessment (on our story from HMH Into Reading for the week) and spelling quizzes on Friday. Dates for other quizzes and tests will vary (math, social studies, science, etc.).

Students are encouraged to correct work throughout the school year as needed. Everyone deserves a second chance. It is a big jump both socially and in terms of curriculum to fourth grade upstairs in our building, and I want to be sure everyone feels challenged but able to keep trying their best, sometimes resulting in mistakes that can be corrected. Please note the policy for re-submitted work:

1. Mark corrected answers in a different color or on a separate sheet of paper attached to the re-submitted work so that I can easily see what the corrected answer is.

2. Submit corrected work no later than one week after the original due date.

3. Note corrected class work policy according to quarter. As students prepare for fifth grade, when corrected work is not readily accepted, the possible amount of points available on the re-submitted work will decrease. Please take care that students do their best work and have attention to detail.

Students are permitted to correct any assignment- worksheet, quiz, test, etc.

For example, if a student received a 7/10 on a quiz in the first quarter and corrected their work, the highest grade they could attain on the redo would be 9/10 if all answers were correct.

Quarter 1: Maximum credit 1 point less than full credit when all correct

Quarter 2: Maximum credit 2 points less than full credit when all correct

Quarter 3: Maximum credit 3 points less than full credit when all correct

Quarter 4: Maximum credit 4 points less than full credit when all correct

The amount of credit a student can earn on redo work will decrease by one point each quarter as we prepare for fifth grade and early middle school expectations, when opportunities for redo work will be few.
