Quarterly Book Reports

Each quarter, students will complete a book report on a book they have recently read. It will give them a chance to explore their story in more detail, read something of specific interest to them outside of assigned reading, apply what they have learned in a cross-curricular manner, and use their reading towards an AR (Accelerated Reader) quiz. Please note that stories already read in class are not acceptable choices for book reports. Also, the book needs to be within each child's AR reading range and be a chapter book approved by the teacher.

The book reports make up a big portion of the quarterly reading grade, as they are worth a lot of points and will be sent home several weeks in advance. Please do not procrastinate. Be as creative as you like! We've had some wonderful creations, and several parents have told me that it has become a whole-family, interactive project.

Before each quarterly book report, I will send home information about the project, as well as a copy of the rubric of expectations for you to keep. Students will do a very brief oral presentation in class about their project and story when they are due. This will give students practice with speaking skills and allow all classmates to learn about each student's book choice and project design. Five points will also be granted toward each project for the return of a book choice slip signed by the parent to ensure that everyone is aware of the project in advance.

I hope the students enjoy the book reports and see it as a fun, creative way to do their Accelerated Reader (AR) required reading, as well as applying the skills they are learning in reading and English class.
